Abstract:
“Young people are often at the forefront… our actions are a barometer, and our needs are a compass” – Nina Grmuša, Chair, Advisory Council on Youth of the Council of Europe.
2026 marks ten years since the landmark climate justice action of water protectors at Standing Rock. Young people’s environmentalism has waxed and waned in the public eye since then, including a surge in global action at the time of the Fridays4Future climate strikes, the impact on that movement of the COVID-19 pandemic, and more recently a global wave of legal cases centred on and often led by young people, holding governments to account on climate change. In this presentation, I explore on some of the complexities faced by young people in this critical moment in human history. I provide suggestions for researchers who are looking to work with and to support young people in their research, as well as reflections on my work with young people including in connection with the Council of Europe and European Commission.
