About

Established in 1989, from an endowment from the Spanish Ambassador, the Wellington Lecture, held at the University of Southampton is given each year on the aspects of the life and times of the first Duke of Wellington.

Over the years the University of Southampton has welcomed a host of distinguished speakers to present the lecture. This year we welcome Bernard Cornwell, who has spent half a lifetime writing, in both fiction and non-fiction, about the first Duke of Wellington, and shares a novelist’s apprehensions of the Duke, looking behind the towering fame and the familiar stories to ask what was Arthur Wellesley really like? Or can we ever know?
