Draw like a scientist, write like a poet, then turn your ideas into a zine in this creative, hands-on workshop.

As part of the British Science Festival 2026, join us at the Hartley Library, University of Southampton for a two-part creative workshop exploring observation, experimentation, and zine-making.

Part one: Observe, record, and reimagine
Ever wanted to draw like a scientist, write like a poet, or see colour like an artist? In the first 90-minute session, you’ll explore different ways of looking at and recording the world around you. Through a series of guided activities, you’ll experiment with three distinct perspectives, those of an Earth Scientist, a Poet, and an Artist, using drawing, short writing exercises, and watercolour painting. These playful and thought-provoking exercises will help you notice new details and develop a collection of creative responses.

Part two: Make your own zine
In the second session, you’ll transform your work into a unique, low-fi publication. Using photocopying, collage, and simple layout techniques, you’ll create your own experimental zine, a personalised piece bringing together your drawings, writing, and visual ideas. You’ll leave with a tangible artwork to take away.

Together, these sessions offer a relaxed and supportive environment for creative exploration, ideal for anyone interested in trying new approaches and working hands-on. No prior experience is needed, just curiosity and a willingness to experiment.

Please note: these sessions are designed as a pair, and participants should attend both in order to complete their zine.

All materials will be provided, and the workshop will be facilitated by student practitioners alongside staff from Fine Art.
