Inaugural Lectures provide an opportunity for newly appointed Professors to share their expertise, research achievements and future ambitions with colleagues, students, collaborators and the wider community.
This lecture will be delivered by Professor Hayward Godwin who will share insights from their research and the impact of their work.
Professor Hayward began his Psychology BSc at the University of Southampton in 2002 and enjoyed it so much that he has never left. He went on to study for his PhD between 2005 and 2008 which focused on visual search in airport X-ray baggage screening. After spending a period of time working as a postdoctoral research fellow, he started a permanent role at the University of Southampton as a Lecturer in 2016. He ran the MSc Psychology course between 2019 and 2022, and since 2022 he has been the Director of the Psychology BSc, returning to lead the course that inspired him on this path to begin with. During his academic career, he has focused on studying search in different forms, including both digital (computer-based) and analogue (in person) searches. He has worked on a number of interdisciplinary projects, working with artists, computer scientists, ship scientists, data scientists, information scientists, with archaeologists, and others besides. Alongside studying search, he has branched out to engage in metascience and open science research, reading research and projects involving clinical psychology.
