Igniting brighter futures:
Jamie’s Ignite journey
The Ignite Programme supports students from backgrounds typically underrepresented in higher education. Entirely funded by your alumni and supporter donations, Ignite offers financial, practical and wellbeing support to students who face barriers, empowering them to thrive at university and beyond.
Among the graduates crossing the stage this summer were 20 Ignite students; talented students from disadvantaged backgrounds whose futures have been immeasurably brightened by your generosity. Students who now go out into the world equipped with not just the skills and knowledge they need to succeed, but the confidence that comes from knowing they matter.
One student currently working towards this landmark occasion is our Ignite columnist, Jamie, who has just finished the first year of their psychology degree.
“As this academic year came to an end, I’ve been taking time to reflect on everything I’ve experienced and how much I’ve grown. University hasn’t always been easy, and semester two definitely brought its share of highs and lows. Exam season in particular was one of the most stressful periods I’ve ever faced. Balancing revision, deadlines, and my own mental health felt overwhelming at times. But through it all, Ignite remained a constant source of support. The programme offered so many helpful resources, whether it was managing exam stress, tackling procrastination, or improving my essay writing skills, which came in incredibly useful on exam day.
“I honestly believe that without Ignite, I would not have had the sufficient support to achieve the grades I got. The workshops and drop-in sessions weren’t just informative, they were reassuring. Knowing that support was always available helped me stay grounded, even when things felt too much. Throughout the entire academic year staff never failed to impress me, always friendly, welcoming, and kind. Another amazing thing I noticed about Ignite was despite knowing staff would be busy, they still held social events. Ignite is not all about education – it’s about community and belonging.
“So, as I wrap up this chapter, I just want to say thank you. Thank you to the donors, the Ignite team, the mentors, and everyone behind the scenes who made this experience what it was. I’m proud of how far I’ve come, and I know I couldn’t have done it without the financial support and the community around me.
“I would also like to give a warm welcome to all future Ignite students. I hope your experience will be as positive as mine.”
After following Jamie’s Southampton journey in Hartley News for the past year, we will be welcoming a new Ignite student columnist in the new year.
Funding futures
We urgently need your help to support more deserving students like Jamie. With the programme set to welcome a further 60 students this year, your donation to the Ignite Programme could make a life-changing difference.
