During graduation in July, world-renowned Formula One engineer Adrian Newey – famously dubbed ‘the man who can see air’ – was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Outstanding Alumni Award in recognition of his remarkable contributions to global motor racing. 45 years since earning his BEng in Aeronautics and Astronautics, 2025 marks a milestone year in Adrian’s journey. We caught up with the F1 legend to reflect on his university experience, his early career, and what he looks for in the next generation of engineers joining his team.

“I feel tremendously honoured to be receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award from Southampton. When I think back to my days there in the late seventies through to 1980, to now be receiving this award, it’s very special indeed.”
